PD Meds I Have Used
Comtan
200 mg
I just finished a trial test using Comtan. It is to be used
ONLY with Sinemet and it's purpose is to prolong the "on"
time of Sinemet to about 6 hours. My reaction to it was as follows:
Good: Increased "on" time to about 5 hours,
reduced tremors and twitches (involuntary movements).
Bad: Hyperactive, constipation, weight loss, upset regular
sleep patterns, sleepy, and lethargic. As a result, I have since
decreased dosage from 3 to 1, and will see how it works.
Deprenyl
(Selegiline)
I have taken Deprenyl and found it useful; but, as I was advised
by my neurologist to use as few drugs as I can, and since Sinemet
works better than Deprenyl for me, I decided to stay with Sinemet.
Liquid
Deprenyl
Pure Liquid Deprenyl is, to the best of my knowledge, no longer
available at the present time. Another version is being sold
in Mexico, California, and in the Channel Islands. My neurologist
has advised me not to use it.
NADH
A long history of use in Germany, with many claims. I have tried
it, and while I can't say it reduced my tremors, it sure increased
my energy.
This is
the extent of my experience with PD drugs.
Agonists
I have not tried Agonists because of the possibility of a "sleep
attack" while driving. Dopamine Agonists, such as: Pariodel,
Permax Mirapex, Requip and Pronoran, are often given to people
with Parkinson's before having to take Sinemet. (These drugs
often postpones the time when the patient has to go on Sinemet).
Others, such as: Requip and Mirapex have been associated with
sleep attacks; and people who drive should not use them. A complete
run down on these drugs can be found in www.medscape.com.
(Note:
I use homemade applesauce (with skins) when taking all pills!)
