Safety
Tips
- If
your B/P is low, when getting up from a nights sleep, a
nap, or from a chair, then stand up slowly, but do not move
away from the bed or chair until you are sure you have stabilized.
That way, if you have to, you can sit back down.
- Never
bend your head down to pick up anything when rising.
- Always
try to put clothing at waist level when retiring.
- Always
carry some drinking water with you wherever you go!
- If
living alone, it might be a good idea to remove (temporarily)
the doors from the wash basin and kitchen sink so that one
could sit on a stool with a safety belt, and have room to
put one's knees below the sinks. The safety belt, would
be fastened on one end, go around the body and a hook would
fit into an eye on the other side. Thus, keeping the person
safely in place.
- The
bath tub should have at least two "grab bars",
and a "non-slip" surface, as well as a bathing
stool, if required.
- Make
sure that if you are wearing slippers, that they fit smugly.
They can cause a person to trip otherwise.
- Footwear
should always fit the condition you are going to be in.
So that you can have the best possible balance. For example,
it is possible to purchase "non skid rubber boots",
at some large dairies.
- Always
turn pot handles in towards the center of the stove when
cooking.
- If
you don’t want anything to fall, put it on the floor in
a safe location. Bend at the knees when picking up or lifting
anything.
- Remember,
you are not on "automatic pilot" any more.
